Home-made compost and coir: different jobs
Home-made compost and coir are not direct substitutes. One recycles decomposed organic material; the other is a coconut-husk component used in growing media.
Compost made from food waste has some challenges, and coir (coconut husk) is often considered a better alternative in certain gardening situations for several reasons....

Separate composting from potting compost
Home composting breaks down suitable garden and kitchen materials. The finished material can be useful in beds and borders. In UK gardening, potting compost also refers to a formulated growing medium, which is a different product.
Coir does not replace the act of composting household plant waste. It may be a component of a growing mix, but that does not make it a complete potting product.
Manage the compost heap on its own terms
RHS guidance emphasises a balance of green and brown ingredients and sufficient aeration. Keep the process appropriate to the composting system you use.
A poorly managed heap should not be used as evidence that composting itself is unsuitable. Equally, buying coir does not solve a compost heap that needs better management.
Choose according to the application
For garden improvement, assess the existing soil and the quality of the available compost. For containers or propagation, consider using a finished product specified for that task.
Home-made compost varies with inputs and maturity. Coir also varies with its source and processing, so neither deserves an automatic claim of perfect consistency.
Do not assume sterility or complete nutrition
Coir is not inherently guaranteed to be free of every pest or pathogen. Store growing materials cleanly and assess their condition before use.
It also does not supply a complete nutrient programme on its own. If making a blend, understand the purpose of each ingredient and the feeding required; avoid assuming that combining two materials creates a universal recipe.
Use each material where it makes sense
A gardener can compost suitable waste and use a coir-containing potting mix for selected container jobs. These are compatible choices.
