Give your hamster a separate fine-coir digging area alongside deep, suitable bedding. Choose Coco Habitat or plain coir bricks, prepare them carefully and keep the main nesting space comfortable and dry.

○
IN ITS OWN TRAY
Use fine coir for a digging zone
Prepare Coco Habitat or plain coir bricks outside the enclosure. Hydrate to loosen, then dry thoroughly before adding to a stable digging tray. Introduce gradually and observe use; replace material that becomes damp or soiled.
◉
ALONGSIDE BEDDING
Separate areas, complementary roles
Combine experiences by placing the coir tray alongside deep, appropriate primary bedding such as suitable paper bedding. Keep materials in distinct areas. The coir offers a different digging texture while the main bedding supports burrowing and nesting.
↗
LEAVE OUT THE CHIPS
Fine texture is the relevant choice
Do not add Coco Terrain coarse chips to the hamster’s digging tray or nesting bedding. Check the tray and surrounding enclosure regularly, and stop using the material if the hamster eats it or shows irritation; seek veterinary advice as appropriate.
PREPARE AND CARE
Prepare thoughtfully. Check regularly.
01
Choose a plain fine product
Use Coco Habitat or confirmed plain coir bricks. Avoid fertilised compost, perlite blends, scented material and coarse chip substrates for this digging activity.
02
Hydrate, loosen and dry
Prepare in a separate clean container according to the pack. Allow the loosened coir to dry thoroughly before use. Do not place a damp block directly in the enclosure.
03
Introduce a separate tray
Use a stable, accessible tray alongside the existing bedding. Start with a small enrichment area and observe how the hamster interacts with it.
04
Check and refresh
Remove food and soiled material promptly. Replace damp coir and retain deep, suitable primary bedding. Store unused compressed bricks dry until needed.
CHOOSE FOR YOUR APPLICATION
Two fine-coir choices—and a clear distinction
Fine coir and coarse chips have different roles. The six-pack is plain coir with no added fertiliser, lime or wetting agent. Match every option to the species and intended use; prices and availability update from our catalogue.

Six plain bricks with no added fertiliser, lime or wetting agent. Use the same preparation and separate-tray approach; keep unused bricks dry for later.

Practical questions, answered
Should I mix coir through all the hamster bedding?+
Keep it in a separate digging tray so the main burrowing and nesting bedding stays suitable. This also makes it easier to inspect moisture and remove soiled material.
How much substrate should I prepare?+
For a rectangular area, length × width × chosen depth in centimetres ÷ 1,000 gives an approximate volume in litres. Choose the depth from species-specific guidance, subtract space occupied by furnishings, and allow for settling. Pack expansion volumes are approximate; hydrate only what you need and store unused bricks dry.
