Choose for the tortoise’s natural environment, digging behaviour and footing. Understand where fine coir may fit, when a combination is appropriate, and why coarse chips are not a default floor covering.
Identify the species · Provide stable footing · Manage moisture
Select the physical structure and moisture conditions around the animal, then choose the product and pack size.
○
USED ALONE
Fine coir needs a clear reason
Do not assume an all-coir floor suits every tortoise. Where an experienced care professional recommends it for a particular setup, prepare fine coir to the required moisture and check that the animal has stable footing and suitable digging conditions.
◉
USED IN A MIX
A component, not the whole plan
Fine Coco Habitat or plain coir bricks may be a component of a suitable soil-based mix where the species’ needs justify it. The base material, moisture, depth and drainage should follow the care plan. Coarse chips are not an automatic addition.
↗
OFTEN THE BETTER CHOICE
Keep soil and species in the decision
For an arid-adapted species, an appropriate soil-based substrate may be preferable to either coir product. Avoid persistently wet conditions where unsuitable, provide a clean feeding surface, and account for indoor or outdoor housing.
PREPARE AND CARE
Prepare thoughtfully. Check regularly.
01
Confirm the environment
Identify the species, life stage and indoor or outdoor setup. Check current care guidance before selecting materials or changing the substrate.
02
Prepare away from the animal
Hydrate and loosen any fine coir separately, then bring it to the moisture condition required by the care plan. Do not substitute fertilised compost.
03
Check footing and digging
Use a suitable depth and stable surface for the species. Observe walking and digging, and adjust the plan if the substrate is too loose or unsuitable.
04
Keep moisture under review
Inspect below the surface as well as on top. Remove waste, maintain a clean feeding area, and replace contaminated substrate as needed.
CHOOSE FOR YOUR APPLICATION
Options to assess against your tortoise’s care plan
Fine coir and coarse chips have different roles. The six-pack is plain coir with no added fertiliser, lime or wetting agent. Match every option to the species and intended use; prices and availability update from our catalogue.
Consider only where fine coir fits the species-specific substrate plan. It may be used in an appropriate mix; it is not a universal tortoise bedding recommendation.
Coarse chips are not our default recommendation for a tortoise floor. Consider only with specific care guidance addressing footing, feeding and substrate ingestion.

Practical questions, answered
Should I add chips to make a tortoise substrate drain better?+
Not automatically. Drainage depends on the whole enclosure or outdoor site, including the base and water input. Large chips may not provide appropriate footing or digging conditions. Resolve the housing and species requirements before changing the blend.
How much substrate should I prepare?+
For a rectangular area, length × width × chosen depth in centimetres ÷ 1,000 gives an approximate volume in litres. Choose the depth from species-specific guidance, subtract space occupied by furnishings, and allow for settling. Pack expansion volumes are approximate; hydrate only what you need and store unused bricks dry.
