Build the substrate around your reptile’s needs. Compare fine Coco Habitat, coarse Coco Terrain and plain coir bricks, then choose the texture and preparation that suit the species and enclosure.
Species first · Choose the texture · Monitor the environment
Select the physical structure and moisture conditions around the animal, then choose the product and pack size.
○
USED ALONE
Fine or coarse—choose deliberately
Fine coir can form a moisture-retaining floor layer in suitable humid reptile setups. Coco Terrain offers a coarser texture where the species’ care plan supports chips. Neither option is a universal choice for reptiles or a substitute for heating, ventilation and hides.
◉
USED TOGETHER
Combine textures with a purpose
In a suitable humid setup, fine Coco Habitat or plain coir bricks can be combined with Coco Terrain for a mixed particle structure. Prepare each separately and assess moisture and footing before use. A coir-and-chip blend is not automatically a complete bioactive substrate.

CHECK THE WHOLE SETUP
Measure rather than mist by habit
Check temperature and humidity where the animal lives, and inspect moisture beneath the surface. Keep food away from loose substrate where appropriate. Seek species-specific advice if the animal eats substrate or if you are unsure which texture to use.
PREPARE AND CARE
Prepare thoughtfully. Check regularly.
01
Expand outside the enclosure
Follow the pack instructions in a clean container. Loosen fully, allow to cool if warm water was used, and adjust excess moisture before introducing it.
02
Set up usable zones
Arrange substrate with the required hides, climbing surfaces and feeding area. Choose depth and moisture by species, rather than by the size of the block.
03
Observe the conditions
Check ventilation, temperatures, humidity and the animal’s behaviour after setup. A damp substrate cannot compensate for unsuitable enclosure conditions.
04
Maintain and replenish
Remove waste and spoiled food promptly. Replace soiled material and follow the species care plan for deeper cleaning. Store unprepared packs dry.
CHOOSE FOR YOUR APPLICATION
Choose the right coir for your setup
Fine coir and coarse chips have different roles. The six-pack is plain coir with no added fertiliser, lime or wetting agent. Match every option to the species and intended use; prices and availability update from our catalogue.
For suitable moisture-retaining setups needing a finer texture. Prepare on its own or combine with appropriate coarse material; animal and enclosure requirements determine suitability.
Coarse husk chips for suitable reptile environments. Use alone only where appropriate, or as a texture component with fine coir. Check current availability below.
Six plain coir bricks without added fertiliser, lime or wetting agent. An alternative fine-coir pack for suitable habitats; expand one brick at a time and keep the rest dry.
No single ratio suits every reptile. Species, enclosure ventilation, moisture targets and feeding behaviour matter more than a fixed percentage. Ask us to compare the products around your care plan; do not treat extra chips as a guaranteed drainage solution.
How much substrate should I prepare?+
For a rectangular area, length × width × chosen depth in centimetres ÷ 1,000 gives an approximate volume in litres. Choose the depth from species-specific guidance, subtract space occupied by furnishings, and allow for settling. Pack expansion volumes are approximate; hydrate only what you need and store unused bricks dry.
