COIROLOGY GROWING GUIDES

Raised beds

A raised bed creates a defined space for roots, watering and soil care. Plan its depth and filling around what you want to grow and what lies beneath.

A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Prepare. Plant. Care.

01

Plan the site and access

Choose a position suited to your crops. Make the bed reachable without standing on the growing area, and choose a height that works for you. Check the condition and drainage of the ground beneath.

02

Work out the volume

Measure internal length, width and fill depth. In metres, multiply these together and then by 1,000 for litres. Allow for settling and follow the actual expanded-volume guidance of any compressed component.

03

Choose the full blend

Use suitable topsoil and well-matured organic matter as the foundation for most open-bottom beds. Coir chips may form part of a deliberately designed blend, but are not a general remedy for poorly drained ground. Hydrate coir components and mix evenly; raised planters on a hard base need their own drainage plan.

04

Maintain the growing layer

Water according to the crop and weather. Review fertility, add appropriate organic matter over time and avoid compacting the bed by walking on it. Select feeding around the crops rather than assuming coir supplies nutrients.
