Prepare a suitable mix
Use an appropriate peat-free compost for seasonal displays and hydrate compressed material fully. Coir chips can add coarse structure where the plants need a more open mix, but balance this against moisture retention in an exposed basket. Plain chips and coir need suitable nutrition; neither replaces the basket liner.
Plant for the final display
Choose compatible plants with similar care requirements. Leave room for growth and space below the rim for watering. Confirm that excess water can escape.
Check moisture frequently
Check daily in warm summer weather, but water according to moisture rather than the calendar. Feed during active growth as appropriate, allowing for fertiliser already in the compost. Review care as conditions cool.
