COIROLOGY GROWING GUIDES

Cacti & succulents

A free-draining root zone is essential for many desert cacti and succulents. Choose a mix that suits the species and dries appropriately in your growing conditions.

A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Prepare. Plant. Care.

01

Begin with the habitat

Check whether your plant comes from an arid or tropical environment. This affects its light, moisture and compost requirements.

02

Build the right structure

Choose a specialist peat-free cactus mix or a species-specific blend. Coir chips may suit some rainforest cacti, but their retained moisture means they are not a universal drainage solution for desert species. Many desert cacti need a more mineral-rich mix; select components around the plant and drying conditions.

03

Use a draining container

Choose a pot with drainage holes and a size appropriate to the roots. Avoid water collecting inside an outer pot. Handle spiny plants with suitable protection.

04

Match watering to growth

Allow the medium to dry as appropriate for the species before watering again. Reduce watering when growth slows and conditions are cool. Feed according to the plant’s requirements and fertiliser label.

CHOOSE FOR YOUR APPLICATION

Products to consider

We do not currently offer a universal finished cactus compost. Begin with a specialist mix for your species; the product below is an amendment, not the complete recipe.

Horticultural Perlite

Mineral amendment

Horticultural Perlite

2L pouch · approx. 2–5mm

An optional amendment in a species-specific cactus or succulent blend. It is not a complete growing medium and does not replace the other mineral components your plant may need.
